Box Not Included

March 8, 2020

Perceptions, definitions, and names are interesting.
They are ways to understand the world by placing everything into nice little boxes. They are generally safe and reassuring, and through those attributes, almost anything can be easily understood.

Looking at characters I noticed the simple, easily defined characters are hardly ever the favorites. The ones who can be broken down into one specific trait are not memorable. The favorites have more than one characteristic whether perception, definition or name.
They usually fit into more than one box.

I then realized, whether a character or person, who says that you have to be only one thing?

Who says you have to be placed in a box?

Individuals who like to easily understand and interact with others around them do so by placing them in boxes. Doing that allows those individuals to easily identify where that person fits in the world the recognize.

What people do not realize is by placing others in a specific box they end up missing the fantastic characteristics that others may have but are not seen.

Defining and placing people inside a perfectly constructed box, eliminates the possibility of growth on their part. And it blinds others from seeing what else that person could be, contribute, and introduce to the world.

As a character, each person could be a hero, villain, rogue, sidekick, clown, or wizard. Though I quickly lose interest if there isn’t something more because one is too simple. Too neat and perfect, yet not very memorable.

Humans are far from simple, far from neat, and definitely far from perfect. Humans are complex, messy, flawed, but this allows for growth and understanding. When let out of the box our characteristics can make us as memorable as part of a great story.

Even a seemingly shallow person has more if you help them out of the box they were placed in and explore what else they could become.

We are complex. We are intricate and odd beings.
We define to understand, but one definition does not explain every aspect, just one part.

Like the best characters, the best people don’t fix in a box.
A box can’t hold all you could be.

Don’t allow definitions to place you in a box. Get out and keep growing, keep learning. Add to your complexity.

No individual is ever one thing, even an open book has more pages than the ones you see.

We are humans capable of always learning, growing, and exploring.
Complex and intracate.

As for me, the box is not included.

  2. I am loving The Adventure Shop! Fiction and fantasy is such a diverse genre, but many times, stories seem to follow similar paths. It can be difficult to find and to write something truly unique, but that is precisely what you have created with The Adventure Shop! Your characters are so relatable, and there are so many great details and descriptions woven throughout each post. I haven’t decided yet which character is my favorite, but once I do, they will certainly hold a spot tied with Greeney ☺️ I can’t wait for your next post!

  3. “One more time.” The way you spoke about that phrase reminded me of Hebrews 12:1-2.
I’m so thankful for the example you are setting.

  4. I admire your willing vulnerability and how you have place fear into the open, showing it to be a sad little creature that can only torment when unacknowledged.
I have not overcome fear of creating in a while, might be time to start seeing as I have a role model.
