A Keeper’s Dream

April 5, 2020

Today was the first day! It was finally here!

Felicity couldn’t believe it. She could officially become a Keeper and protector at one of the Reserves. After interning and working for so long she finally came to the age she could put all that hard work to use.

She loved all animals, but especially the mythical ones. Creatures that everyone thought were legends she worked with every day.

“Are you Felicity?” A woman with reddish curly hair asked.

“Yes.”

“Good. Your early.” She said checking her watch. “I’m Gwen. Head Keeper and go-to for most things. Each Enclosure has its own Keeper who knows the most about the animals they care for. Your goal and ours is to ensure the animals feel free and wild. So keep as little contact as possible. You worked for a Reserve before?”

“I interned in Africa. My dad was from a small region before he met my mom at a Court assembly there.”

“Good. Now in other regions, there is some variety in the creatures you’ll care for. Here due to the smuggling about two hundred years back or so, we have a wide variety. Let’s walk.” Gwen said.

She showed me the grounds. The door to each Enclosures door that led to the expansive ground the animals lived. As they passed each one she described the creatures residing there.

“Those are the horses that eat people?” I asked.

“More like any meat. They’re not picky. We let our more invulnerable Keeper’s deal with their feed time. Any heirs of theirs still roaming the earth are shipped to here or Greece. You don’t have impenetrable skin do you?”

I shook my head no.

“Oh. Too bad. Anyways, many of the creatures are still poached if found in the wild by Blackmarket peddlers trying to sell fast magic. You must protect the secret of this reserve and its residents. No one must know where we are. Can you do that?”

I nodded yes. Not believing this was actually happening.

“Good.” She showed me a few more enclosures. Creatures I recognized from the time at the place I interned, others only from stories.

“Now this, Miss Felicity, is where you will be working.”

I saw creatures that looked like the earth’s Lemur with reddish fur and wings that looked like a mix of a bat and birds.

“These are the Kape Kumakain. First discovered by one of our scientists, in charge of finding and documenting any of our kind, in 1382. They absolutely love coffee beans and are pretty playful. They have a sharp bite so try not to tick them off. They are benevolent and like to give things to their Keeper. Accept. We have been building back their population slowly after they were almost wiped out.”

“Why were they almost extinct?”

“Their fur. It is addictingly soft. Popular for the fur trade, but given a different name. Which is why some human poachers even go after the wrong animal. Everything else you need to know is in that file by the door on the Enclosure. It was taken from the Enchiridion itself, but we add more details as we learn about them.”

“Why add more details as we learn about them?”

“I like your curiosity. Because there is always room for learning and expansion of knowledge.”

“Well Miss Felicity, these are yours to protect and keep. To ensure their safety and well-being. Do you accept the role and the challenge that lies ahead?”

“I do,” I said almost giddy.

“Then you are officially a Keeper. Congratulations. I’ll leave you to get to know them. Call if you need anything.”

“Yes mam. Thank you!”

I looked at the entrance of the Enclosure. One of the Kape Kumakain flew up to the edge, placing its paw on the magic barrier.

I placed my hand up next to it. Finally, I was here.

Working as a Keeper. All my hard work paid off.

And my dream came true.

  2. I am loving The Adventure Shop! Fiction and fantasy is such a diverse genre, but many times, stories seem to follow similar paths. It can be difficult to find and to write something truly unique, but that is precisely what you have created with The Adventure Shop! Your characters are so relatable, and there are so many great details and descriptions woven throughout each post. I haven’t decided yet which character is my favorite, but once I do, they will certainly hold a spot tied with Greeney ☺️ I can’t wait for your next post!

  3. “One more time.” The way you spoke about that phrase reminded me of Hebrews 12:1-2.
I’m so thankful for the example you are setting.

  4. I admire your willing vulnerability and how you have place fear into the open, showing it to be a sad little creature that can only torment when unacknowledged.
I have not overcome fear of creating in a while, might be time to start seeing as I have a role model.
