A Great Haunt: Part 2
September 6, 2020
“Why are we going back? I don’t want to go back.” The cameraman, George, whined staring at his friend and then the house.
“We lost the last video when we lost the camera and this was the first place that was actually haunted. Hill Mansion is gonna make us rich!” Kevin replied, fixing his hair in the car door mirror. “And we have to have money to pay for a better camera than your sister’s.”
“Hey! My sister didn’t have to let us use it. At least we have something. What I really want to know is: is it worth it? The ghost sounded really angry last time when we messed up her living room. I don’t want to meet her again.” George replied as he packed a battery into his bag and a rain poncho in case of flying paint, again.
“We’ll be fine! Look the others are here. More numbers will help keep the ghost running after the others. Let’s go get our fame!” Kevin said as the cars pulled up.
George shook his head as he followed putting on the poncho, hoping that this wouldn’t be as bad as the last time.
“Amber. Amber!” Coal yelled as he looked out the window.
“What? I am trying to teach the kids right now. It would be helpful if you could help until Roger and Elizabeth get back.” She replied walking down the stairs.
“Your fine. You’re a better teacher any way. Now come here.” Coal said looking out the window.
“I don’t care if I am a better teacher. You were supposed to take over and,”
“Okay, next time. Look. Those guys that ruined all our paints that I had to clean up are back.”
“Yes those are the guys, but you were the one that made the mess.”
“Let’s agree to disagree. What are we gonna do? They brought friends. Annie’s gone and we are the only two babysitting.”
“I am babysitting and teaching. Next time don’t take a three hour lunch.” Amber commented.
Coal was about to respond when they heard the back door open.
“Guys, there are people outside.” Roger called as he and Elizabeth walked through the kitchen.
“We know.” The other two yelled back in unison.
“What do we do?” Coal asked.
“Well since they’re here now we can use this as a teaching moment.” Amber replied.
Roger and Elizabeth came to look out the window with Coal.
Roger stepped back crossing his arms over his chest, “What the plan, Amber?”
“Teaching moment. For the kids and for those hunters. If they want Ghosts we’ll give them Ghosts!”
“Oh yay! I was so sad I missed out last time. It so fun! These guys will be so scared!” Elizabeth replied, smiling mischievously.
The instructors discussed the plan with their students and divided up the nine. Roger would be the only Ghost without students in order to ensure the safety of the others if the teaching moment became dangerous. After all though it was a teaching moment their main goal was to keep their students safe while in their care.
“We are back at the Hill Mansion. Last time we visited the haunted fortress we proved a ghost spirit resided here. Broken hearted, scorned, and did not like paint all over her living room. Trust me folks this place is gonna be a mess.” Kevin said entering the living room with George as the others made their way upstairs to explore the many other rooms.
“George are you seeing this? Everything looks amazing! The furniture is still antique looking, but everything is clean and painted. The Ghost fixed the place up. Not a bad job either.”
“Or someone else lives here and we are trespassing.” George pointed out like any normal person would.
“And they kept the outside looking like this place is a haunted dump? Come on dude! Its Ghosts! They can’t go outside so they made the inside beautiful.”
“Whatever. Keep going before the others come down here.” George said with an eye roll as the other hunters could be heard exploring the various rooms.
“Oh! Let’s go to the kitchen!” Kevin replied not paying attention to George or the others.
George once again rolled his eyes and followed.
“Dude! This fridge is full with fresh stuff! And so are the cabinets! Yay! They have sourdough pretzels!”
“You can’t eat their snacks.”
“Why not?”
“Because.”
“Because? That is not a good argument.”
“Aaahhhh!!! Make it stop! No! NO! Why? AAAAHHH! Let’s get out of here!” They heard from upstairs.
They peaked out of the kitchen’s swinging door as it sounded like a heard of elephants stampeding down the stairs toward the door.
They were covered in leaves, flowers petals, honey, sprinkles and chocolate syrup, and the most awful shade of orange paint.
The two watched from the kitchen as the others ran to their cars leaving them behind.
The crept back in the kitchen as Kevin began to stress eat the pretzels.
“Do you want to go upstairs and check it out?” George asked.
“Shhh! Something’s coming!” Kevin replied holding the bag of pretzels even closer.
“Ha! Their gone. And now we don’t have to use that stupid orange paint for the classrooms.” They heard a guy say.
“Coal you planned that! I can’t believe you. You better clean that up before Annie gets home.” A stern girl’s voice reprimanded.
“Yeah, yeah. Same song different verse. My kids did awesome! They scared them and had so much fun!” The guy replied.
“Mine had way more fun! We scared them so good! And they looked so colorful with all the sprinkles! It was so much fun and they were so scared!” Another girl squealed excitedly.
From the kitchen Kevin whispered, “Dude, its the Ghosts!”
“Ssshhhhh!” George hissed.
“Did you hear that?” Amber asked as she turned to a guilty looking Coal. “Coal, did you make sure the house was clear?”
“Well not exactly.” After a look from the girls Coal shouted, “Roger followed them out! I thought we were good. That’s why we let the kids have free time now. Its not my fault if there are others.”
The three Ghosts walked into the kitchen to see a guy eating a bag of Roger’s pretzels and another hiding behind the island counter wearing a plastic poncho.
Amber sighed and smacked Coal upside the head, “Do you see this? Do you actually see this? Annie is gonna be ticked.”
“They don’t know everything. We can explain it all. Right?” Elizabeth winked at Amber to imply the truth they could tell.
“All clear guys. Except one car.” Roger said walking through the walls.
Amber facepalmed as the guy with the pretzels fell to the floor, completely passed out.
The one with the camera screamed.
And screamed.
And screamed.
And screamed.
“Shh, its okay. Drink this.” Elizabeth put a finger to her lips as she handed the guy a glass of water and motioned for him to drink.
“What are you?” The cameraman said after a drink that was not entirely helpful.
They all smiled and Elizabeth answered sweetly,
“Haven’t you guessed? Were Ghosts!”

I am loving The Adventure Shop! Fiction and fantasy is such a diverse genre, but many times, stories seem to follow similar paths. It can be difficult to find and to write something truly unique, but that is precisely what you have created with The Adventure Shop! Your characters are so relatable, and there are so many great details and descriptions woven throughout each post. I haven’t decided yet which character is my favorite, but once I do, they will certainly hold a spot tied with Greeney ☺️ I can’t wait for your next post!

“One more time.” The way you spoke about that phrase reminded me of Hebrews 12:1-2.
I’m so thankful for the example you are setting.

I admire your willing vulnerability and how you have place fear into the open, showing it to be a sad little creature that can only torment when unacknowledged.
I have not overcome fear of creating in a while, might be time to start seeing as I have a role model.

I think putting yourself out there is one of the most terrifying things you can do, but it can be so rewarding! So I try to not think of the negative “what if’s” but rather the positive ones, you’ve got this!
